The Donkey Palio, the crazy race that sees the city’s nine boroughs compete for the drape, takes place on the first Sunday of October in Piazza Senatore Osvaldo Cagnasso.
On Sunday, before the race, there is the assignment of the donkeys that run the Palio for each borough. The assignment is already a preview of the Palio, all played out on ancient schemes and singular contests. And then comes the real Palio. A goliardic day, staged with total respect for the animals, in an arena full of colours, costumes, bravery and loud cheering. Then there are two heats and a final round to determine the race winner. The winner will be awarded with the drape, usually painted by a great artist, who will undoubtedly be able to portray the history of the Palio and the boroughs on the canvas.
At 2:00 PM, before the race begins, the city’s streets will come alive with the medieval historical parade: starting from Piazza Michele Ferrero, the procession will make its way along Corso Fratelli Bandiera and Corso Matteotti, continuing on to the Palio field, where the performers will carry on with their parade.
